Description

Squirrelfish, or `ala`ihi as they are known in Hawaii, are nocturnal fishes that hide in dark areas during the day, emerging at night to feed. Popular for eating raw, salted, or broiled after drying, it is said to have been a favorite fish of King Kamehameha III (reigned 1825-1854).

This is an original, one-of-a-kind, hand-rubbed impression taken from the freshly caught fish. Printed onto mulberry paper using the direct method of gyotaku with archival, printmaking ink. It is PH neutral (acid free). The paper measures 9 inches x 12 inches and has a soft deckle edge, which looks great when “floated” in a frame, rather than mounting it under a mat.

Titled “`ala` ihi (Sargocentron diadema)” in the lower left corner. Signed in pencil and stamped with my red chop in the lower right corner. Includes a signed certificate of authenticity.
