Description
The Orangespine unicorn fish (Naso lituratus) is known as Umaumalei in Hawaii. One of the most unusual and beautiful fishes of Hawaii. The orange, yellow, and blue markings glow like traffic lights in the water where they are often seen in schools feeding upon algae. A sharp, blade-like caudal spines is ahead of the tail on each side.
It’s colorful markings fade to a muddy grey/brown once they are out of the water. I used reference photos to try to keep me somewhat on track as I inked the fish. I was only able to make a couple of rubbings before putting it away in the freezer to try again another day. This fish was kindly provided by local spear-fisherman, Ricki Cole.

One of the main ways to protect your artwork from moisture, dust, and UV rays is to frame it under conservation glass or acrylic which has a coating that blocks the UV rays. A mat is optional, as long as the artwork is not in direct contact with the glass.
