Description

The Orangespine unicorn fish (Naso lituratus) is known as umaumalei in Hawaii. One of the most unusual and beautiful fishes of Hawaii. The orange, yellow, and blue markings glow like traffic lights in the water where they are often seen in schools feeding upon algae. Two sharp, blade-like caudal spines are ahead of the tail on each side.

It’s colorful markings fade to a muddy grey/brown once they are out of the water. To capture the essence of this fish, I relied on reference photos to try to keep me somewhat on track as I inked the fish. This fish was kindly provided by local spear-fisherman, Ricki Cole.

Original gyotaku printed in the direct method (Chokusetsu-ho) onto beautiful washi paper using an archival printmaking ink. The paper measures 11 inches x 20 inches and has deckled edges. It has been dry mounted to an Xuan rice paper backing.

Titled and signed in pencil and then stamped with my red seal. It will arrive with a certificate of authenticity.
